Ready to send your rambunctious pup to daycare to burn some energy? Or, need to find the perfect place for your dog to stay while you vacation?
Here are our top tips for what to look for when picking a daycare or overnight facility for your cherished canine companion:
- Take a tour: Is the facility clean? Are the staff interacting with the dogs? Are there WAY too many dogs for the staff members to safely manage? Hint: Ten dogs per play group employee is best. If your daycare boasts less than ten dogs per staff member, you found a WINNER! Have the owner contact us, that’s a daycare we want to promote.
- Health and safety: Be doggone sure there is a process in place to keep vaccination records updated. And dig around to make sure the facility has a plan in case of an emergency. It’s best that the entire staff is CPR certified and demonstrates during your tour that they conduct stringent temperament testing, separate dogs based on play-style, and utilize proactive strategies to prevent scuffles. You also need to know before you head out of town that the daycare will fully honor your in-case-of-emergency instructions.
- The staff: Is the front desk staff welcoming? Are the play group attendants trained in subtle nuances of canine behavior? Are they willing to accommodate reasonable requests such as dietary limitations, mobility issues, and downtime from play groups? How does the staff assure your dog only leaves the facility with you or designated people?
- Cross-reference review sites: You’re trusting strangers to care for your dog all day or days on end. Spend the time to check out various online resources of real consumer reviews. The dynamics of each daycare varies, you want to make sure your pup is the right place for his playstyle, temperament, and activity level.
